Red Hawk Casino is a full-sized casino with no onsite hotel on a hillside overlooking the Sierra foothill countryside near Placerville, CA. It was opened in December, 2008 and is located approximately 40 miles east of Sacramento along highway 50 towards Lake Tahoe.
Parking
About a mile off of highway 50Red Hawk has a large parking garage with lots of space for cars. There is limited space for RV and truck parking at the bottom of the hillside.
There are many tour buses available from as far away as the Bay Area approximately 2-3 hours away. The website has quite a list of cities that are served by various charter providers. You should check for your area if interested. As with most bus services to casinos they are moderately priced and there is some sort of coupon or free play offered.
Lodging
There is no onsite hotel. There are several hotels within approximately 5 miles away in nearby Placerville and other small cities along highway 50. Discounts available through casino Rewards Club card.

Why play here?
It’s a little strange to say that location is a primary reason to visit here. It is located between the San Francisco Bay Area / Sacramento area and Lake Tahoe immediately off of Interstate 50 near Placerville, California. Since it is on the way to Lake Tahoe it would seem to appeal to those that want a day trip to the casino rather than a weekend. In fact they have busses that run from various locations to the casino daily. It is only 30-40 minutes from Sacramento which put it in some competition with Thunder Valley located north of the metropolitan area. We have visited this casino on our way back from Tahoe a couple of times but you have to be a diehard casino fan to stop at one more casino on this trip. We use it as a “rest” stop from the drive since it is so conveniently located less than a mile off the freeway.
I must say the overall atmosphere is really nice – inside and out. The drive up to the parking garage is a short one but if you fancy a view, then the parking garage offers some nice ones. The casino is built on a cliff which offers great views of the Sierra foothills not only from the garage but also from the Waterfall Buffet and Koto Grille while dining.
Inside you will find a large casino with lots of slots, tables, clean restrooms, and great restaurants. There is a great variety of games available throughout the casino to satisfy every gamer. There is also a large non-smoking casino downstairs. This place is very popular and can seem pretty crowded even as large as it is. I believe that the rewards system is very liberal with lots of giveaways to bring local people back frequently. In addition to the rewards program, there are free coffee and sodas available throughout the floor. They treat their frequent visitors well with gifts and promotions.
As for attractions, there aren’t too many. The casino is nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills near gold country. It is beautiful countryside but not much in the way of attractions in the nearby area.

Overall this is a nice place to visit for a short time or for a day and take in the views during a nice meal or some gaming. We will have to try one of the bus charters someday to see how convenient they are.

Waterfall Buffet, Henry’s Steakhouse (fine dining), Pearl Asian Cuisine, Two Rivers Café (coffee shop), Koto Grille (Mexican-American), Hawk’s Coffee (snacks).
In addition to the gambling there is a variety of wonderful food. This is one of the main reasons that my wife and I have stopped here a few times for our “rest” stops. We have only eaten at Koto Grille because we don’t eat enough to make the buffet a good value for us. The food was great. We also love the view and the fact that we get right in. We noticed that the lines for the buffet get very long which indicates that the food must be very good. I have heard the same comments from others and there are many reviews state the same as well.
